Game studios tier list 2027: best and worst developers ranked

GameDevGameDev—October 16, 2026

Evaluating the leading game studios in the industry requires looking far beyond their legacy. You have to analyze their recent performance, how they treat their flagship franchises, and the raw quality of their latest releases. Ranging from S tier down to F tier, this ranking breaks down exactly why each studio earned its current spot on the ladder.

  • A tier: CD Projekt Red, Embark, id Software, Naughty Dog
  • B tier: Arkane, Respawn, Playground Games
  • C tier: Obsidian
  • D tier: Bungie, BioWare, Epic Games

F tier: studios that failed expectations

343 Industries

343 Industries took over Halo, one of the biggest franchises in gaming history, with massive momentum behind them. Despite that advantage, Halo 4, Halo 5, and Halo Infinite never reached the heights of the original trilogy.

The Master Chief Collection launched in a completely broken state. I remember sitting in lobbies for hours on launch week due to endless matchmaking errors. It was left broken for years before they finally patched it up. Having an unplayable multiplayer mode for that long stands out as one of the studio’s biggest failures, landing them firmly in the F tier.

Blizzard

Blizzard has a legendary track record:

  • Warcraft
  • Diablo
  • StarCraft
  • World of Warcraft
  • Hearthstone
  • Overwatch

They were beloved by almost every gamer right up until Overwatch. Since then, every new release has faced massive backlash. The internal studio scandals and their overall attitude toward the player base completely shattered their reputation. Given their recent performance and poor handling of major franchises, Blizzard sits in the F tier.

Ubisoft

Ubisoft holds the keys to massive series like Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and Rainbow Six. However, they fail spectacularly at monetizing franchises that people already love. Faced with the choice of making a good game or a bad game, they almost always choose the latter.

Rainbow Six Siege is the only thing keeping the company afloat, yet Ubisoft tries its hardest to ruin that game too. The fact that they have to sell off parts of the company just to survive summarizes their current state perfectly.

Riot Games

I skipped League of Legends entirely, and I only tested out Valorant for a brief period. However, the outrageous prices demanded for in-game skins and the studio’s well-documented internal issues easily push Riot Games into the F tier.

Bethesda Game Studios

From Morrowind all the way to Fallout 4, Bethesda was a fan-favorite studio. Everyone has their own breaking point with them, but for the general audience, that point was Fallout 76. Personally, Fallout 4 was the beginning of the end.

The studio always acts like they know best, essentially holding one of the most beloved IPs hostage. They receive very little community support nowadays, and it is entirely well-deserved. You cannot spend 8 full years developing Starfield only to release a dated experience and expect to escape the F tier.

D tier: developers that lost their potential

Bungie

Back in the day, Halo was the undisputed king of console gaming, and every release felt like a massive cultural event. Looking at how 343 Industries handled the IP makes you realize just how much magic Bungie brought to the table. Destiny was a massive success, but the word on Destiny 2 has been entirely mixed, with players claiming its golden age happened somewhere in the middle of its lifecycle.

Then came Marathon, which was a total trainwreck:

  • They used stolen artwork.
  • The gameplay was incredibly boring.
  • They claimed all the fun elements would be added later, which is a bizarre way to announce a game when you have nothing to show for it.

The numerous internal scandals were just the cherry on top, pushing Bungie firmly into the D tier.

BioWare

BioWare has a deeply impressive legacy:

  • Baldur’s Gate 1 and 2
  • Knights of the Old Republic
  • The Mass Effect trilogy
  • The beloved entries of the Dragon Age series

Years of consistent success crashed hard with Mass Effect Andromeda, Dragon Age Veilguard, and Anthem. Anthem has one of the saddest histories in gaming. It featured the best flight mechanics ever utilized, giving you a true Iron Man experience. I spent hours just flying around the map until a random server disconnect kicked me out, but everything else in the game was hollow. You cannot build an entire game solely on flight mechanics. BioWare is solidly in the D tier.

Epic Games

Epic Games is known purely for Fortnite these days; Gears of War is a distant memory. While many consider Fortnite a bad game, it undoubtedly expanded the gaming industry and popularized the battle pass system. Unreal Engine has its ups and downs, but the real tragedy here is Rocket League.

Epic used their Fortnite money to buy Psyonix and immediately made Rocket League free-to-play. They pulled it from Steam, locked it to their own platform, and then developed a Rocket Racing mode—but added it to Fortnite instead. They stripped content from Rocket League to build a new Fortnite mode while giving Rocket League players almost nothing. After years of useless updates, the only decent change was a UI indicator showing your teammate’s boost amount. Their launcher occasionally gives away good free games, but nobody actually buys anything there.

C tier: stuck in past shadows

Obsidian

Obsidian created one of the greatest games of all time with Fallout New Vegas. The sheer freedom in that game is staggering:

  • You can kill absolutely everyone and still complete the story.
  • You can finish the entire game without killing a single person.
  • The narrative is far superior to standard RPG tropes.

Stick of Truth was also fantastic, but the studio has felt completely stagnant ever since. Many doubt they can ever recreate the magic of New Vegas—it is a different era with different people. I haven’t played their recent titles, but the general consensus online points to them being aggressively mediocre.

B tier: good with minor flaws

Arkane

Dishonored 1 and 2 are phenomenal games with a fiercely loyal fanbase. The Wolfenstein games were also great successes, while Deathloop received highly mixed reviews.

Redfall was a literal studio killer. It shut down Arkane Austin, halted all development after a disastrous launch, and Microsoft even refunded DLC purchases. I tried to boot up Redfall on day one, and the technical bugs made the game freeze before I even left the first area. Still, Arkane stays in the B tier because Redfall felt heavily forced by Microsoft. When Arkane makes the games they actually want to make, they produce incredible work.

Respawn

Titanfall was excellent, and Titanfall 2 was completely robbed of its success. It launched exactly one week after Battlefield 1 and one week before that year’s Call of Duty, effectively killing the franchise right there.

Apex Legends has a dedicated core audience and a unique structure compared to other battle royales, even if it does not fit my personal taste. However, Apex suffers from a massive cheater problem that likely persists today. Looking at their other titles:

  • Fallen Order was great.
  • Medal of Honor was terrible.
  • Jedi Survivor was highly praised.

Basing this on reviews rather than personal playtime, Respawn earns a solid B tier.

Playground Games

Between 2012 and 2021, Playground Games developed Forza Horizon 1 through 5. With Horizon 6 and Fable planned for 2026, they are heading into a massive year. They consistently score very well across all their releases, which is highly promising. However, they have exclusively focused on one specific type of game for over a decade. Making the exact same game repeatedly prevents them from ranking higher, earning them a conservative B tier. (This is exactly why no Call of Duty developers made this list—they are factories, not development studios).

A tier: strong industry leaders

CD Projekt Red

CD Projekt Red is famous for The Witcher and Cyberpunk, but their true strength lies in their ability to pivot when things go wrong. When Cyberpunk 2077 launched in a broken state, the studio rolled up their sleeves and fixed the game. I remember my character glitching through the floor on day one, but they completely overhauled their entire development pipeline to repair it. They didn’t just fix Cyberpunk; they released arguably one of the best DLCs ever made. If Witcher 4 launches as a masterpiece, they could easily jump to the S tier.

Embark

Embark has two major titles under its belt:

  • The Finals: Hovering around 15,000 daily players.
  • Arc Raiders: Pulling in roughly 322,000 daily players.

The Finals had massive momentum at launch but failed to sustain it, leading the studio to pivot hard toward their next release. Arc Raiders had an incredibly strong launch and maintains a staggering player retention rate at this scale. While it is not my personal favorite genre, you have to respect a studio that builds something so widely loved and keeps players engaged this well.

id Software

There isn’t much to debate regarding id Software. Doom completely changed the gaming landscape. They did it again with Quake, and while they haven’t revolutionized the industry recently, they consistently drop highly polished, excellent products.

Naughty Dog

Naughty Dog has an untouchable legacy:

  • Crash and Jak are legendary series.
  • Uncharted is a phenomenal action franchise.
  • The Last of Us 1 is widely considered the greatest piece of media ever created, unmatched by any film, show, or competing game.

The Last of Us 2, however, fell flat for many. Their upcoming Intergalactic project does not look appealing either, though that might be a personal preference since I am completely burned out on space games. There is a lingering feeling that the studio has been fully consumed by its publisher, but their track record keeps them firmly in the A tier.

S tier: peak of gaming industry

Larian

Larian has been grinding away at the Divinity IP since 2002. Original Sin 2 was fantastic, but Baldur’s Gate 3 easily ranks among the top five games ever made. It was universally praised by fans and critics, dragged a niche genre directly into the mainstream, and set the modern benchmark for all RPGs. Even the cinematics in Divinity look absolutely stunning. Everyone trusts this studio to deliver, making them a definitive S tier developer.

Capcom Division 1

Capcom’s internal structure can be confusing, but Division 1 is the powerhouse responsible for:

  • Every Resident Evil game starting from RE7
  • The modern Devil May Cry titles
  • Dragon’s Dogma

Division 1 operates across four internal departments, allowing them to juggle four AAA titles simultaneously. Because they answer to the same leadership, they are graded as a single studio. They shipped all these massive hits within a 6-year window, producing some of the most beloved games of the generation. Resident Evil 3 felt a bit light on content, but Resident Evil 2 was such a masterpiece that it easily makes up for it.

Rockstar North

Rockstar North has never missed on a major release. Every single game they prioritize becomes a massive cultural milestone, and even their smaller releases are highly polished. They hold the highest prestige of any developer in the industry. While GTA 5 launched in 2013 and we haven’t seen a new release since Red Dead Redemption 2, the sheer quality of their single-player worlds is unmatched. If you care deeply about the monetization of GTA Online, you might be frustrated, but purely as a game developer, they are flawless.

FromSoftware

FromSoftware has been dominating the industry since Demon’s Souls dropped in 2009. They single-handedly created the Souls-like genre and continually outpace every competitor trying to copy their formula. Even their recent live-service experiments perform decently without major complaints from the core player base. While their recent Nintendo exclusivity deal was highly questionable, their relentless consistency leaves no choice but to place them at the absolute top of the industry.

Conclusion

Ranking game developers requires an honest look at their current trajectory, not just the games they released a decade ago. Studios like Larian, Capcom Division 1, Rockstar North, and FromSoftware maintain the absolute highest standards in the industry, proving that prioritizing game quality builds lasting trust. Meanwhile, legacy giants like Blizzard, Bethesda, and 343 Industries serve as harsh reminders that past success cannot hide broken launches, poor community management, and stagnant game design.
