1. Information We Collect

Comments When you leave a comment on our site, we collect the data shown in the comments form, along with your IP address and browser user agent string. This helps us detect and prevent spam. An anonymized string (hash) created from your email address may be provided to the Gravatar service to verify if you use it. Once your comment is approved, your Gravatar profile picture will be visible to the public alongside your comment. (You can read the Gravatar privacy policy here: https://automattic.com/privacy/).

Media Uploads If you upload images to the website, we strongly advise you to avoid uploading images that contain embedded location data (EXIF GPS). Visitors to the site could potentially download those images and extract your location data.

2. Cookies and Tracking Technologies

We use cookies to enhance your browsing experience and remember your preferences:

  • Comment Cookies: If you leave a comment, you may opt-in to saving your name, email address, and website in cookies. This is for your convenience so you do not have to re-enter your details next time. These cookies last for one year.
  • Login Cookies: When you visit our login page, we set a temporary cookie to verify if your browser accepts cookies (this contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser). When you log in, we set cookies to save your login information (lasts for two days) and your screen display choices (lasts for one year). If you select “Remember Me,” your login will persist for two weeks. Logging out will remove these cookies.
  • Publishing Cookies: If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie is saved in your browser. It contains no personal data, simply indicates the post ID of the article you just edited, and expires after 1 day.

3. Embedded Content from Other Websites

Articles on game-developer.com may feature embedded content, such as videos, images, or articles from other websites. This embedded content behaves exactly as if you had visited the other website directly.

Please note that these third-party websites may collect data about you, use their own cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that content—especially if you have an account and are logged in to their site.

4. How We Share Your Data

We do not sell your personal data to third parties. We only share data in the following operational capacities:

  • Spam Detection: Visitor comments are checked through an automated spam detection service.
  • Security Actions: If you request a password reset, your IP address will be included in the reset email for your protection.

5. Data Retention

  • Comments: If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are kept indefinitely. We do this so we can automatically recognize and approve any follow-up comments instead of holding them in a moderation queue.
  • Registered Users: If you register an account on our website, we securely store the personal information you provide in your user profile. You can view, edit, or delete your personal information at any time (with the exception of your username). Website administrators also have the ability to view and edit this information.

6. Your Data Rights

If you have an account on game-developer.com or have left comments, you retain full control over your personal data:

  • Access: You can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you.
  • Erasure: You can request that we completely erase any personal data we have on file for you.

Please note: We cannot erase data that we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.
